Last weekend, the city of Cleveland played host to my family. It was awesome,
as there were two major sporting events going on there. The event that we went to was the Tigers - Indians game. Although I would have rather gone to the Cavaliers - Pistons game, we bought the Tigers tickets back in March, and we had no idea that the basketball teams would be playing on the same day in the same city. The atmosphere there was incredible. When we first got there on Friday night, around 8:00, we had stopped at a place called "The Winking Lizard." Yes, it's an odd name, but that place was cool. Incredibly, there were a lot of Tigers fans there, and the game was on about 10 different TVs. When Tigers score you would hear a roar, and then after the Tribe scored, there was another roar. The good part was that we left before the Tribe made their comeback in the 9th inning. Who knows how that place was after that. We then went to the Great Lakes Science Museum (or Center, I'm not sure). Although science has nothing to do with sports, there was an exhibit called "Baseball as America" there, which was part of the reason why we went there. There were artifacts from the Baseball Hall of Fame, things like bats used by Babe Ruth and Ty Cobb's shoes. The action really heated up later that night. The Cavs game was about an hour after the Tigers game started, so we were hoping to get across the street to "The Q" to watch the game on the screen they had on the stadium. The game was really long, almost four hours. The Tigers did win though. At least half of the crowd was Tiger fans. The section we sat in was a Tiger section, with fans leading "Let's go Tigers!" chants which went through Jacobs Field. In the picture below you can see the view of the field from where I was sitting. They were also handing out C.C. Sabathia bobble heads (see picture below). It was 70s night, which is why the C.C. bobble head is all dressed up. Sorry that the picture is bad (I took it with my phone, and I forgot to take one of it at the field). On the way back to the hotel we were talking to Tiger fans who were saying thing like "look on E-Bay tomorrow for this," and for some people they had two parts - the head and the body. There were also some die-hard Cleveland lunatics (remember, this is a Detroit fan here). Cleveland fans were walking around with shirts that said "Detroit Sucks" with sucks replacing the Pistons part which is on their logo. There was also a shirt that more people were wearing that said "Beat Detroit" with the Cavs red background. After the Tigers game, we were unable to get across to "The Q" because of the mob of people, since the Cavs just won the game. There were cars honking and people yelling. Loud. When we got back to our hotel, which was about four blocks from Quicken Loans Arena, we could still hear people. In fact, the fans kept most people up in hotels for most of the night because of the win. That was how huge that game was to the city of Cleveland. It was a good "mini-vacation." I would like to go back there again, this time when the Ravens are playing the Browns. |
