While the fans poured onto the field, the Houston Cougars hoisted a trophy that ended a decade of mediocrity.

Quarterback Kevin Kolb threw for two touchdowns and ran for another as the University of Houston Cougars won the Conference USA Championship for the first time since 1996.

"A lot of people doubted us and said it couldn't be done," said Kolb, who completed 19-for-31 passes for 258 yards and two touchdowns. "It was done tonight and hopefully, for the program, it will continue to be done."

In addition, Kolb became C-USA's all-time passing leader, with 12,578 career passing yards, passing Louisville quarterback Chris Redman.

Playing in 40 degree weather did affect the Cougars for much of the first half, as they fell behind 17-13 at halftime. However, early in the third quarter, Kolb faked a handoff to Jackie Battle and sprinted for a touchdown, the longest run of his career. After that, the record-crowd of 31,818 fans at Robertson Stadium came alive and Kolb took care of the rest.
