Week 1 featured some exciting games. The Rapids - United game was my favorite
(scene as how it was the only one I could watch), but another good one was the
Chivas USA - Toronto game. Here's your week one recap (logos are from
Yahoo! Sports): Colorado Rapids vs. D.C. United New home. No problem. The Colorado Rapids kicked off the MLS season by defeating D.C. United 2-1 at Dick's Sporting Goods Park. Herculez Gomez scored the first goal at the Rapids' new park, after Terry Cooke sent a nice cross that found Gomez's head, and put the Rapids up 1-0 in the 19th minute. Newly acquired Greg Vanney helped set up the second Rapids goal. Vanney passed the ball to a streaking Kyle Beckerman. The ball them came to Cooke, and he gave it to a wide open Roberto Brown who put it away. The goal was Brown's first goal in MLS action. Luciano Emilio scored for D.C. United in the 80th minute, but it wasn't enough as Colorado celebrated a win in their new stadium. Chivas USA vs. Toronto FC Welcome to the MLS, Toronto. The Ante Razov lead Chivas USA ruined Toronto's MLS debut by defeating them 2-0. Experience was golden in this match, as six starters on Toronto never had played in a MLS match, while Chivas had just one - forward Maykel Galindo. Razov tacked on his 99th career goal in the 35th minute, putting Chivas up 1-0. Galindo assisted on the goal, when Toronto goalkeeper charged him, but Galindo smoothly passed it to Razov who easily put it in the net. Chivas tacked on another goal in the 88th minute, when 2006 SuperDraft pick Sacha Kljestan rocketed a ball from 20-yards away. Chicago Fire vs. New England Revolution As being one of the MLS's most heated rivalries, the Chicago Fire defeated the New England Revolution 1-0 Saturday night at Toyota Park. The Fire struck early, when Logan Pause scored his first MLS goal in the fourth minute. After that, the Fire's defense took over. Goalkeeper Matt Pickens was outstanding, repeatdly stopping shots from superstar Taylor Twellman. Columbus Crew vs. New York Red Bulls The Crew and Red Bulls played to a scoreless draw Saturday night at Crew Stadium. Although the game was scoreless, the score could have been higher with all the chances both teams had. Columbus had one really good chance in the 20th minute, when the ball was loose in the six-yard box, but the Red Bulls cleared it from danger. The Red Bulls also had a chance to score seven minutes later, but could not get it past goalie Andy Gruenebaum. FC Dallas vs. Real Salt Lake FCD, with a little help from Carlos Ruiz, were able to come away with a 2-2 draw against Real Salt Lake Saturday at Rice-Eccles Stadium. Dallas opening the scoring in the 19th minute when Kenny Cooper kicked it past RSL 'keeper Nick Rimando to give the Hoops a 1-0 lead. But in the 29th minute, Jeff Cunningham evened the score up, touching the ball past Shaka Hislop. After the break, RSL came out strong, with once again Cunningham scoring in the 51st minute, giving Salt Lake a 2-1 lead. It looked like FCD's chances were shot, but in the final minutes of the match Ruiz tapped the ball into the open net, making sure Rimando payed for his goalkeeping gaffe. Los Angeles Galaxy vs. Houston Dynamo The Houston Dynamo came into the game with a little inspiration behind them. The Dynamo raised their 2006 championship banner before the game, reminding them of their great play last year. The Galaxy played to a scoreless draw against the Dynamo. May I remind you that David Beckham was not in this game, he will be playing in July when his contract with Real Madrid ends. The Dynamo put up a good effort, even when they were down a man. Ryan Cochrane was sent off in the 76th minute after he pulled down the Galaxy's Robbie Findlay from behind. Brian Ching and Dwayne de Rosario had a lot of chances for Houston, but could not put any away. Landon Donovan also had chances for the Galaxy, but could not put any way. Both Joe Cannon (Galaxy) and Pat Onstad (Dynamo) played exceptionally well for their teams. |
