This years Heisman race was a no-brainer. The Heisman voters had it easy.
The clear cut choice was Ohio State Buckeyes Quarterback Troy Smith. The hard part for Smith was trying to stay composed. Right after he heard his name being called, he stood up and hugged everyone that was important to him, took a deep breath, and walked up to the podium. "Normally, I'm pretty cool in pressure situations, but my heart is pounding so fast now," he said. "I'm at a loss for words. I just can't believe this is happening. ... It means everything. Just to be here in this situation. I love everybody back home in Columbus." Troy won by an overwhelming amount, leaving Arkansas RB Darren McFadden, and Notre Dame QB Brady Quinn in the dust. Smith received 801 first-place votes and won the Heisman by 1,662 points. McFadden (878) finished second, Quinn (782) was third and West Virginia running back Steve Slaton (214) was fourth. Quinn had some good words for Smith, saying this after he won this prestigous award: "I'm proud of him and everything he's accomplished," Quinn, a fellow Ohioan, said of Smith. "Knowing his background, knowing where he comes from, I think it's an important thing to understand why he's so driven and so deserving of such an award." Smith's magical season started when he overcame the then number 2 ranked Texas Longhorns with a flawless performance. Then he finished it off by beating number 2 at the moment Michigan Wolverines, throwing four touchdown passes. Now that the Heisman is out of the way, there's only one more goal for Smith: Beat the Florida Gators for the national championship on Jan. 8. |
